Chapter 11

Raine

Keegan and I had been at Halo setting up his drum kit and the microphones and doing a sound check. Because the cafe was open for customers, we had to be as unobtrusive as possible, and with the stage nothing more than a small area of roped off floor space, the four of us would basically be jammed in like sardines.

Jitters hit when Ebony and Corey arrived. Talking in low voices, we confirmed our set of songs, Corey taping the list to the floor so he knew the order. Ebony was wearing a red dress, reindeer earrings and a Santa hat, but none of us boys could be persuaded to be festive. I preferred my usual black jeans, black boots and black t-shirt combo and I’d start with my jacket, at least until I got too hot. I don’t know if I was imagining it, but my jacket smelled different since Bianca returned it, nicer, a subtle fragrance of her. A reminder of her. That’s why I was wearing it.

Every time the door opened, I had an attack of nerves as I hoped to see Bianca walk in. But as each minute passed and more bodies crammed into the cafe, my heart sunk a little that she wasn’t here. Mom, Jade and my Aunt Kristy were at a front table, all dressed up with full makeup on and trying to blend in with our school friends. There were a few unfamiliar faces, though I couldn’t be certain they were Covington Prep kids.

“So, I don’t see her yet,” Keegan said, nudging me.

“Who?” I feigned ignorance.

Keegan laughed, but said nothing, merely arching an eyebrow.

“I didn’t ask her on a date,” I protested. “She probably forgot about it.”

That made him grin wider. “I look forward to hearing you sing at the next gig,” he said, his round cheeks full and smug.

I shook my head and rolled my eyes and pretended to inspect the tuning pegs on my guitar, my heart palpitating as more kids came in. More kids, but not Bianca. There was no time to dwell on her non-attendance though, because Keegan clashed his cymbals and we started with our first song, Bring it on.

After the second song, I had to take off my jacket as the cafe was sizzling. Kids were out of their seats dancing, the atmosphere electric, the room on fire. Totally in the zone, music was my sole focus. The addition of a jazzed up rap version of Jingle Bells to end the show was a hit, and all too soon the gig was over.

And Bianca hadn’t turned up.

Jade was quickly by my side, having applauded the loudest all night. “This is a way bigger crowd than last time,” she said. “Word is getting out. Everyone loved you.”

“Thanks,” I said, “I appreciate it.”

“Proud as always,” Mom said, kissing my cheek, followed by Aunt Kristy, her bright blue eye makeup a little much.

“Are you going straight home?” Mom asked.

“Probably hang with Keegs for a bit,” I said.

“Okay, see you later.
